Leadership Role for Women – A Survey On Gender Diversity and Empowerment in Maldives

The Survey on Gender Diversity and Empowerment in Maldives was conducted to give credibility and visibility to the subject of gender diversity and promote the empowerment of women in leadership within the atolls and remote islands.

Gender equality is one of the few Millennium Development Goals the Maldives is lagging behind. It is of great imperative for a broad national survey to be conducted that brings about various aspects of gender diversity including board diversity in Maldives.

This project will deliver a national survey which will create documents and academic literature for academics, the public and the donor agencies. It should also help policy makers by providing them with recommended actions.

The survey was conducted in a professional manner using experts relevant to the subject and the research methodology of this survey entrenches to the entire nation. Furthermore, using the survey and other existing research, the project will promote the role of women in society and specifically the ‘economic empowerment’ of women not only in Male’, but in the atolls as well.

The project is a baseline for Research as associations and listed companies show that gender equality & diversity policies are not practiced in companies due to lack of awareness among many other reasons. The reasons for hesitancy of women to apply for Board and leadership positions is not surveyed or understood and not even documented.

The launch of this project itself is a major success as the Maldives do not have any data collected, academic literature and documented for this area. We believe that the findings from this survey will provide valuable information on the contemporary status of women and serve as a guidance and benchmark for the government and other implementing agencies in Maldives.

The Project was financed under grant aid from the British Government through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom, The British High Commission, Colombo, with the Project Consultant being Dr. Bandi Ram Prasad of Growth Markets Advisory Services, Mumbai
